Action spectrum for an enhancement of endogenous respiration by light in chlorella.
نویسنده
چکیده
The oxygen consumption of a starved chlorophyll-free, yellow mutant of Chlorella vulgaris is enhanced by very small amounts of blue light (lambda 450 mmu); a saturation level is reached at about 500 ergs cm(-2) sec(-1). At that intensity the respiration is about 3 times greater than in the dark. An action spectrum for the enhancement of respiration shows 2 peaks around lambda 450 and 375 mmu. Flavins and cis-carotenoids are discussed as the pigments involved.

Responses of Heterotrophic Cultures of Chlorella vulgaris Beyerinck to Darkness and Light. II. Action Spectrum for and Mechanism of the Light Requirement for Heterotrophic Growth.
Chlorella vulgaris Beyerinck (Emerson's strain), fails to grow in the dark even when sugars are provided. This phenomenon was clearly demonstrated in the alga, C. vulgaris, for which the growth rate in darkness on a glucose medium remained constant for 2 days and then declined to approach zero. Pigment concentrations also declined in darkness. Changes in flow rate of 1% CO(2)-in-air from zero t...
متن کاملThe Course of Respiration during the Life Cycle of Chlorella Cells
Endogenous and glucose respiration were studied during the life history of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. A generalized picture of the course of respiration during the life cycle is suggested. At the liberation of daughter cells from the wall of the mother cell, or soon after, the respiration rate reaches its lowest level. If the daughter cells are placed in light the respiration rate rapidly increases...
متن کاملOxygen uptake, acidification of medium and nitrate uptake induced by blue light in nitrate-starved Chlorella cells.
Blue light-induced oxygen uptake of the colorless mutant of Chlorella kessleri (No. 9.80) was 30-40% higher in the presence of exogenous glycine than in its absence. None of the other amino acids tested had this effect. Moreover, mutant cells in which glutamine synthetase was inhibited by methionine sulphoximine, accumulated approximately 65% more ammonium ions under blue irradiation in the pre...
متن کاملThe endogenous respiration of microorganisms.
In respiration studies and work on oxidative asimilation by microorganisms it is often of interest to know whether or not the endogenous respiration continues in the presence of an external substrate. Indirect methods, such as those first described by Barker (1936), have frequently been used in attempts to answer this question, but they are not entirely satisfactory. A more direct approach has ...
متن کاملAn Endogenous Immune Adjuvant Released by Necrotic Cells for Enhancement of DNA Vaccine Potency
Background: Improving vaccine potency in the induction of a strong cell-mediated cytotoxicity can enhance the efficacy of vaccines. Necrotic cells and the supernatant of necrotic tumor cells are attractive adjuvants, on account of their ability to recruit antigen-presenting cells to the site of antigen synthesis as well as its ability to stimulate the maturation of dendritic cells. Objective: T...
